Services
I offer services for assessment and diagnosis for Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or combined.
The majority of my appointments are conducted remotely, via Microsoft Teams. However, face-to-face appointments can be arranged at my office in Market Harborough if that would be preferred.
As a Clinical Psychologist I have the professional qualifications and experience to conduct psychological assessments and diagnoses. All of my practices adhere of professional guidelines defined by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). My assessment protocol also follow best practices set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and diagnoses are made based on internationally recognised criteria described within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases 11th Edition (ICD-11).
If you have any specific queries then feel free to contact me at ryan@rjlneuro.co.uk or you can book an initial consultation now.
-
The first step in the process is to contact myself through my email address ryan@rjlneuro.co.uk or the contact forms on this website. From there we arrange an initial consultation that should be within 1-2 weeks of your request.
The initial consultation is free and will take <30 minutes. It is an opportunity for me to get an understanding of what you are looking for and why. I will ask some questions to get an idea about whether my service would be suitable for you. This will include some very brief screening questions about symptoms of Autism or ADHD, some questions about any comorbidities and (such as learning disabilities, severe mental health difficulties) and a brief risk/safeguarding assessment.
If we decide that one of my services will be appropriate for you, we will arrange a date to complete a full assessment of ADHD or autism.
I will send out an information pack, which will include full details of the process, a contract and consent document. Depending on whether you are seeking an autism, ADHD, or combined assessment, there will also be questionnaires and background information to fill out and return to me prior to the full assessment appointment.

ποΈ Step 1 (Initial Consultation) β 15-30 minutes
The first step of any of our assessment pathways is the initial consultation (see section above).
π Step 2 Information Gathering
(At this point, you will be asked to pay Β£375 to secure your follow-up appointment)
Following your initial consultation, should you wish to proceed with my ADHD assessment plan, I will provide you with some forms to complete prior to your diagnostic appointment. You will be asked to complete a New Client Intake Form and Current Functioning Forms, as well psychometric assessment that screen for mental health, risk and other differential diagnoses.
For adults: Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation β Outcome Measure (CORE-OM); Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale Self-Report (WFIRS-S); Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS) or Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale-IV (BAARS-IV).
For children (age 11+): Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Rating Scale (VADRS); Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ); Revised Childrenβs Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS).
𧩠Step 3 β Screening Results and Psychosocial Clinical Interview (1β2 hrs)
(At this point, if you choose to proceed, you will be asked to pay the final Β£375 to secure your full diagnostic appointment.)
We will meet for a diagnostic appointment to conduct a thorough assessment (via video call or face to face). This will take approximately two hours and will include a comprehensive psychosocial clinical interview and a review of the assessment documents you will have completed.
At this stage, we will have a rough understanding of the likelihood that ADHD will be diagnosed. If it seems unlikely at this point, we can decide together how you would like to proceed. If you do not proceed to the full assessment, you will not have to pay the second Β£375.𧩠Step 4 β Diagnostic Interview (1β2 hrs)
This part of the assessment will include the full Diagnostic Interview for ADHD (DIVA or Young-DIVA) and a QbCheck (if needed). These assessments are well-validated, have strong sensitivity and specificity, are widely recognised, and together form a thorough assessment to evaluate for ADHD.
If time allows, Steps 3 and 4 can be combined into a single, longer appointment lasting 2β4 hours.
π Step 5 (Results and Report) - Free β 30 minutes
Feedback from your assessment will be provided verbally (either over the phone or in a video call) and in a report. The feedback call will last around 30 minutes, during which we will discuss the outcome of the assessment and potential next steps.
An ADHD assessment cannot be carried out in isolation; it must form part of a broader psychosocial evaluation. As such, the assessment will also consider differential diagnoses (i.e. other possible explanations for your difficulties). If it emerges that your difficulties are better explained by another condition (e.g. Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Insomnia), we will also discuss this.Following the feedback appointment, a full diagnostic report will be written and sent to you within two weeks of the outcome decision. If you need a quicker turnaround, then a simple confirmatory letter can also be sent within 24 hours.
π€ Step 6 (Post-Assessment Support) β Optional
See section below. -

-
Following your assessment, I will provide you with verbal feedback. You will also receive a comprehensive written report that outlines the outcome of the assessment, whether a diagnosis has been made, and a detailed profile of your strengths, challenges, and needs.
If a diagnosis of ADHD or Autism is confirmed, your report will include:
A clear explanation of the diagnostic decision
A summary of assessment findings and observations
Personalised recommendations for support, adjustments, and next steps
Information on resources, services, and helpful tools relevant to your needs
π‘ What Can You Do with the Report?
Your diagnostic report can be used to:
Access workplace or university adjustments
Apply for support such as Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)
Inform therapeutic support, coaching, or educational planning
Share with health professionals or support services as needed
π What If Youβre Considering Medication for ADHD?
If you wish to explore medication, I can support you in the following ways:
Option 1 (most common): You can share your report with your GP, who might offer an NHS referral to start a medication plan under the care of an appropriate NHS clinician.
Option 2: I can signpost you to private prescribers who offer medication reviews and prescribing services for individuals who have received an ADHD diagnosis .
-
Following our assessment, I offer follow-up psychotherapeutic support. This can be for the individual being assessed or for family members of children who receive a diagnosis.
Note: Post assessment follow up therapy is available whether or not you receive a diagnosis.
As we are undertaking a broad psychosocial assessment, you may find that you are experiencing difficulties associated with Autism, ADHD, or other psychological conditions, such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or a range of other challenges. These may also include sleep-related issues, which are common in individuals with neurodevelopmental or psychological conditions.
You may need a space to process the diagnosis and consider what it means for you, your future, and your identity. Alternatively, you may be seeking more specific therapy for particular anxieties, psychological difficulties, or sleep disturbances related to your diagnosis.
As private therapy can be expensive, my initial recommendation will be to access freely available NHS support. However, we can explore your options, and if you would like to continue your care with me, I will be happy to accommodate this.
The therapy I offer consists of up to six sessions of psychotherapy, informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Sessions are paid for on a per-session basis. Once you have begun, there is no obligation to complete all six sessions if you feel they are no longer needed.
