Services

I offer services for assessment and diagnosis for Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or combined.

The majority of my appointments are conducted remotely, via Microsoft Teams. However, face-to-face appointments can be arranged at my office in Market Harborough if that would be preferred.

As a Clinical Psychologist I have the professional qualifications and experience to conduct psychological assessments and diagnoses. All of my practices adhere of professional guidelines defined by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). My assessment protocol also follow best practices set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and diagnoses are made based on internationally recognised criteria described within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases 11th Edition (ICD-11).

If you have any specific queries then feel free to contact me at ryan@rjlneuro.co.uk or you can  book an initial consultation now.

  • The first step in the process is to contact myself through my email address ryan@rjlneuro.co.uk or the forms on this website. From there we arrange an initial consultation that should be within 1-2 weeks of your request.

The initial consultation is free and will take <30 minutes. It is an opportunity for me to get a bit of an understanding of what you are looking for and why. I will ask some questions to get an idea about whether my service would be suitable for you. This will include some very brief screening questions about symptoms of Autism or ADHD, some questions about any comorbidities and (such as learning disabilities, severe mental health difficulties, high levels of risk).

If we decide that one of my services will be appropriate for you, we will arrange a date to complete a full assessment of ADHD or autism.

I will sent out an information pack, which will include full details of the process a contract, and consent document. Depending on whether you are seeking an autism, ADHD, or combined assessment, there will also be questionnaire and background information to fill out and return to me prior to the full assessment appointment.

  • Following your initial consultation, should you wish to proceed with my ADHD assessment plan, I will provide you with some forms to complete. These include standardised ADHD psychometric measures, as well as background information forms to support the assessment.

We will then meet for a second appointment to conduct a thorough assessment via video call (or face to face, if you prefer). This will take approximately two hours.

You may then choose to have a feedback session, during which we will discuss the outcome of your assessment, what it means for you, and your options moving forward. An ADHD assessment cannot be carried out in isolation; it must form part of a broader psychosocial evaluation. As such, the assessment will also consider differential diagnoses (i.e. other possible explanations for your difficulties). If it emerges that your difficulties are better explained by another condition (e.g. Generalised Anxiety Disorder), we will also discuss this.

If you choose not to have a feedback appointment, I can send you all the relevant information in your final diagnostic report.

Within 24 hours of your feedback appointment, I will send you a brief confirmation letter outlining the outcome, followed by the full report within 2–4 weeks.

To ensure the highest standards, I use a combination of psychometrically validated questionnaires, performance metrics, developmental history, current functioning, and clinical observation.

    The assessment will include:

    For adults:

    • Comprehensive psychosocial clinical interview

    • The Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults (DIVA)

    • QbCheck

    • CORE-OM

    • WFIRS-S

    For children:

    • Comprehensive psychosocial clinical interview

    • The Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults – Young Version (Young-DIVA)

    • QbCheck

    • Vanderbilt

    • Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire

These assessments are well-validated, have strong sensitivity and specificity, are widely recognised, and together form a thorough psychosocial assessment to evaluate for ADHD while considering differential diagnoses.

  • Following your assessment, I will provide you with verbal feedback. You will also receive a comprehensive written report that outlines the outcome of the assessment, whether a diagnosis has been made, and a detailed profile of your strengths, challenges, and needs.

If a diagnosis of ADHD or Autism is confirmed, your report will include:

    • A clear explanation of the diagnostic decision

    • A summary of assessment findings and observations

    • Personalised recommendations for support, adjustments, and next steps

    • Information on resources, services, and helpful tools relevant to your needs

💡 What Can You Do with the Report?

Your diagnostic report can be used to:

    • Access workplace or university adjustments

    • Apply for support such as Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)

    • Inform therapeutic support, coaching, or educational planning

    • Share with health professionals or support services as needed

💊 What If You’re Considering Medication for ADHD?

If you wish to explore medication, I can support you in the following ways:

    • Option 1 (most common): You can share your report with your GP, who might offer an NHS referral to start a medication plan under the care of an appropriate NHS clinician.

    • Option 2: I can signpost you to private prescribers who offer medication reviews and prescribing services for individuals who have received an ADHD diagnosis .

  • Following our assessment, I offer follow-up psychotherapeutic support. This can be for the individual being assessed or for family members of children who receive a diagnosis.

Note: Post assessment follow up therapy is available whether or not you receive a diagnosis.

As we are undertaking a broad psychosocial assessment, you may find that you are experiencing difficulties associated with Autism, ADHD, or other psychological conditions, such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or a range of other challenges. These may also include sleep-related issues, which are common in individuals with neurodevelopmental or psychological conditions.

You may need a space to process the diagnosis and consider what it means for you, your future, and your identity. Alternatively, you may be seeking more specific therapy for particular anxieties, psychological difficulties, or sleep disturbances related to your diagnosis.

As private therapy can be expensive, my initial recommendation will be to access freely available NHS support. However, we can explore your options, and if you would like to continue your care with me, I will be happy to accommodate this.

The therapy I offer consists of up to six sessions of psychotherapy, informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Sessions are paid for on a per-session basis. Once you have begun, there is no obligation to complete all six sessions if you feel they are no longer needed.
